In California, Belly of the Beast has been a critical tool in raising awareness about forced sterilizations and calling for redress, with screenings and panels aimed at legislative audiences. The film helped garner nearly 20,000 signatures on a petition to Governor Newsom and dozens of letters of support. Additionally, we collaborated with survivors and allies championing reparations legislation to bring together a historic bipartisan panel of southern Republicans and California democrats in support of the sterilization compensation program.

In July 2021, California became the first state to provide both notification of coerced sterilization and reparations to survivors who were sterilized while incarcerated in its state women's prisons. It is the third state to provide monetary compensation to survivors who were sterilized under state eugenics laws, following in the footsteps of North Carolina and Virginia. As this historic victory offers momentum for a national movement, we are leveraging the power of BELLY OF THE BEAST to expand legislative efforts to additional states and the federal level.

  BELLY OF THE BEAST BOOK DRIVE

Belly of the Beast is partnering with the Prisoners Literature Project to provide books to people inside prisons. The PLP gets about a thousand letters a month from people who are incarcerated all over the US requesting books on all kinds of subjects, and sends out about 25,000 books a year. The books on this list have been compiled with input from people in prison, community partners and allies. Books bought to donate can be sent to Bruno/PLP at 976 60th Street, Oakland, CA 94608.
